Wargames Atlantic Death Fields: The Damned Army Box

I recently picked up this new army box from Wargames Atlantic for their tabletop skirmish game “Death Fields Arena: The Greatest Sport Is War” and wanted to do an overview of what you get and my thoughts on the box overall. It cost $136 AUD which is about $90 USD/$75 GBP.

I wasn’t looking to build a sci-fi/post apoc army but when the box contains 52 models at less than $3 AUD a model I found it hard to resist. That amount of value is insane.

Ready For The Apocalypse

The Damned Army contains 12 hard plastic sprues that will allow you to build 52 multipart models. These include:

• 18 Damned Infantry
• 12 Damned Female Infantry
• 6 Brutes
• 3 Heavy Weapons Teams
• Artillery Unit and 8 Crew
• Full Command Team

All the models are displayed on the top of the box and look amazing. The side panels of the lid show each of the units. When you pick the box up it feels solid (my copy had imprints of sprues pushing up the cardboard) and nothing moves around inside the box when you turn it over to look at the back. It is packed solid with plastic.

Note: The box does not contain instructions or bases. I don’t see the lack of instructions as a negative because most of the models only require adding arms, weapons, heads and other little details like ammo pouches, knives and magazines. The arms have a flat attachment that fits flush to the torso. I think even somebody with limited model building experience wouldn’t find assembly too challenging, maybe a little fiddly. Outside of the Brute models, all the torsos and legs are a single piece.

Each sprue is labelled with what unit you are building which makes things so much simpler. A single sprue contains the body and legs, arms, heads, weapons and other details like pouches, etc.

The infantry models have a variety of poses from standing, running and even some kneeling. Weapons are a standard spread of scifi/post apoc options ranging from shotguns, machine guns, plasma guns and melee weapons. I’m a sucker for weapons with shoulder straps and some of the shotguns have straps with extra shells.

The heads are a mix of male and female sporting helmets, gas masks, bald heads with chaos symbols /scars and plain heads.

The lack of bases is not a deal breaker as most of us will have a collection of suitable bases on hand. I went with 25mm bases for the infantry models.

I assume not including bases was a way to keep the cost down.

A Question of Scale

I took a few pics of assembled infantry models beside Necromunda Hive Scum and Genestealer Cult miniatures. They scale very well against these models and would fit in most scifi/post-apoc settings.

Wrapping Up

Pros

• 52 hard plastic models for less than $140 AUD.
• Good level of detail considering the price.
• Generic sculpts allow for use across many games.
• A huge variety of build options with static and dynamic body poses, male and female bodies, a huge range of heads, weapons and accessories.
• Fairly simple assembly with a one piece torso that you attach arms and heads to.
• Massive kitbash potential for other projects with all the extra leftover bits.

Cons

• No assembly instructions. The box photos are big and clear and can be used as inspiration.
• Some parts are a little fiddly especially the supporting arms for rifles, shotguns, heavy weapons, etc.
• Dry fitting may be necessary for some parts as not all arms fit with all weapons (I had to have a quick look at the box with one of the brute models as I clipped the wrong arm piece and it was too short for the weapon attached).
• No bases. To be fair most of us have many spare bases.
• The sheer number of models may be overwhelming.

In conclusion…

Overall this box is crazy value and provides you with so many different models to fit whatever project you’re working on.

I heartily recommend this product.
